The Physician Benefits Gap: What Candidates Aren't Seeing in Job Listings

5:07

When healthcare organizations advertise physician positions, they tend to highlight compensation, sign-on bonuses, location, and clinical responsibilities. But an important part of the employment package may be missing from those listings, even when the employer already offers it.

A September 2026 analysis from Marit Health found that 69.7% of physicians reported receiving a continuing medical education (CME) allowance, yet only 35.1% of active physician job listings mentioned the benefit. Just 6.7% disclosed a dollar amount. Among listings that did, the median annual allowance was $4,000. The analysis examined physician compensation submissions and more than 427,000 active physician job listings.

These findings highlight a straightforward opportunity for healthcare employers. A benefit may have real value to prospective hires, but candidates cannot consider it when comparing opportunities if they do not know it exists or understand what it provides.

CME funding supports physicians as they maintain certifications, attend professional conferences, and keep up with changes in clinical practice. Depending on the employer's policy, an allowance may cover conference registration, educational materials, courses, and other qualifying expenses. For physicians who regularly pursue additional training, that funding can be a meaningful part of the overall compensation package.

Of course, a CME allowance will not determine every physician's decision to accept a position. Compensation, scheduling, call responsibilities, clinical autonomy, and location can all carry significant weight. However, when candidates compare multiple opportunities, specific details about benefits help them understand what each employer offers.

The gap often comes down to how recruitment materials are created. Human resources teams may maintain detailed benefits packages, while recruitment advertisements focus on salary, clinical duties, and hiring incentives. Benefits such as professional development funding, conference support, and certification reimbursement can get lost in the process.

Consider two physician job listings. One offers a salary range and a general statement about professional development. The other explains the annual CME allowance and outlines which expenses qualify for reimbursement. Even if both employers offer comparable benefits, the second listing gives candidates more useful information when evaluating the opportunity.

Healthcare employers can address this by reviewing their job advertisements alongside their actual benefits packages. Recruitment teams should work with HR to identify which benefits can be promoted, whether eligibility varies by position, and what candidates need to know before applying. When appropriate, listings should state the value of a CME allowance rather than simply mentioning that one is available. Any eligibility requirements or reimbursement restrictions should also be explained clearly.

The same review can uncover other benefits worth communicating, including educational leave, relocation assistance, retirement contributions, and professional development opportunities. Not every detail needs to appear in every advertisement. The goal is to prioritize information that helps candidates evaluate the position and understand the full employment package.

Where that information appears also matters. A short job board listing may not accommodate every detail, but a dedicated physician careers page can provide a fuller explanation. Recruitment advertisements can highlight relevant benefits and direct candidates to that page. Across channels, the information should remain accurate and consistent with the actual offer.

Employers should also avoid assuming that a benefit is unimportant simply because competing organizations offer something similar. A CME allowance may not differentiate an employer on its own, but disclosing the amount allows candidates to make a more informed comparison. Clear information can also reduce uncertainty and help candidates ask more relevant questions during interviews.

The Marit Health findings offer a useful starting point for a broader review of physician recruitment advertising. Organizations can examine whether their listings accurately communicate the benefits they provide and identify details that may be missing from standard templates. They can then monitor whether clearer listings improve candidate engagement or lead to more informed conversations during recruitment.

Physician recruitment involves much more than benefits, and no single allowance can compensate for an unsuitable role or an uncompetitive offer. Still, recruitment advertising should give candidates an accurate picture of what an employer provides. Sometimes, improving a recruitment campaign does not require a larger budget or a new strategy. It starts with communicating the value that already exists.
