Up Your Game! Hashtags for Job Seekers and Recruiters

As little as five years ago, it was fairly acceptable for Recruiters, Hiring Managers and even job seekers to be “in the dark” with regard to social recruitment techniques. Today, it is expected that both sides of the coin be informed as they seek out qualified hires and worthwhile employers, which is why we compiled a list of useful hashtags YOU (yes you) should know and start using today…

Hashtags are essential to winning the social talent acquisition game. They can be used to directly promote jobs, to show candidates that you are a recruiter who is actively seeking candidates and also provide the opportunity for you to show off a company’s culture to more passive candidates. So, here’s the thing; finding a job socially is much more of a follower / awareness game. The hashtags mentioned above in the Recruiter section are perfect follow options. Depending on your priorities, follow them all (especially custom ones by preferred employers) and you will be the first to see new postings and therefore the first to apply!

Of course, in addition to following, you can also promote yourself and your current situation with a few of the following:

#jobhunt #jobsearch #hireme

#MBA #BFA #linkedinprofile #resume #portfolio #graduatejobs #resume

Tell it Like it is

#unemployed #resume #needajob

Best-hashtags.com has an ever rotating, ranked list of hashtags for recruitment and other areas if you ever want to see real-time rankings!

While we encounter many of these hashtags on a regular basis, this article does draw inspiration from all of the following articles (thank you!)

Okay…so there are some rules though! We know, we know, no one wants to hear it, but rules are important here. Depending on where you are using hashtags, limits matter. For instance, on Twitter, we recommend (and so does Twitter) a max of 2 per tweet. Sure, three might be okay from time to time, but keep it clean and easy to read.

On Instagram, we encourage you to tag the HECK out of your posts (up to 30, as that is a maximum allowed), BUT please, please, please focus on relevancy!

For hashtags on LinkedIn, take Hootsuite’s advice, “There are no limits to the number of hashtags you can use in a post on LinkedIn. That said, we recommend that you limit each post to a maximum of five hashtags.”  It’s easy because the LinkedIn platform makes relevant suggestions! Use them! Often, they are trending on the network.

Other Ways to Compete

When forming your hashtag / social strategy, consider competition!

As a recruiter…
  • Look into what your competitors are doing to find talent.

  • Find out which posts are garnering the best results (and try to diagnose why!)

  • Use the information you find to create a recruitment brand identity for sourcing!

As a candidate…
  • Find out what hashtags your desired employers are using to find talent (and follow, follow, follow!)

  • Look at what successful candidates are doing to socially promote themselves.

  • Use both of the ideas above to craft a uniquely "you" style strategy (AKA: Are other candidates using video? No? Do it!)
